Poverty Point Trip
Troop 16 took off on a day trip to Poverty Point, north of Delhi, LA. The boys hiked the 2.6 mile trail while learning about the Poverty Point's history. After the hike, they cooled off in the air conditioned visitor center where they watched a movie about Poverty Point. Following lunch, the boys headed down to the
Poverty Point Reservoir State Park to cool off with a swim. Though the water level was low, the boys had a good time. Of course, on the way home, the boys stopped for ice cream.
D'Arbonne State Park
Troop 16 spent a day at D'Arbonne State Park. We started the day off with swimming. We had to scouts complete the BSA swimmers test. This test requires the scout to swim 75 yards using 2 different strokes, like the breast stroke and side stroke; then on the last 25 years must be on their back using the elementary back stroke. After swimming, we ate lunch and started our 5 mile
hike using a map and compass. This hike is a requirement for Second Class Rank. I must admit, the hike was hot, but the boys persevered through it. Of course, when we were done, we jumped back into the pool to cool off.
Summer Camp
Troop 16 spent a week at Summer Camp at Camp T. L. James. We had a great time. We had 3 new scouts get a great jump start on their trail to Eagle. Also, an older scout completed 2 merit badges and worked on 2 others while at camp. Troop 16 was award best camp site for the week, based on cleanliness and most improved. Though it was hot each day, we enjoyed camp.
